My Fascination with Historical Fiction

Historical fiction has always fascinated people. There is something extraordinary about leaving the four corners of one’s mind and into different landscapes, long-forgotten but absolutely inviting. A time in history when there were no computers and phones to distract people from their lives. A period in history where humans lived intensely, experiencing emotions like happiness, love, and anger from the depth of their beings.

We have connected with the psyches for many millennia through our epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. We have felt the pain of Lord Rama and enjoyed the victory of good over evil in the end. Every time we read the epics and the Puranas, a part of us gets transported into the mind space of the larger-than-life characters, experiencing the pleasures and pains of the protagonists.

How would wars have happened thousand years back? A war without grenades, missiles and atom bombs. It could have been a war for one’s rights, a war for satisfying greed or a war for revenge. Our imagination takes flight when the writer describes landscapes that are breathtakingly beautiful and awe-inspiring. Sometimes, we marvel at the architecture of those days: the temples built with so much love and devotion but with no power tools and heavy equipment to carry those large rock inscriptions.

How would people have felt love? It is the same feeling but perhaps, expressed in different ways. Monogamous rulers have only been in our imagination, whereas reality reveals polygamy. How would one feel when that love could not be expressed because of political situations or social constraints? Thus, it is always a nostalgic experience to delve deep into the past and present them creatively to delight oneself and the readers.

After pondering deeply on many of these ideas, I have written a novel called “The Kingdom of Malayadhwaja”, which will take you on an enthralling journey across the fictional kingdom of Malayadhwaja. You will feel Queen Vindhya’s victories and defeats. Queen Vindhya is a ravishing, strong queen who loved her husband intensely. After her husband’s death in the war, she takes on the most challenging role of ruling her kingdom with traitors and enemies on every side. Will she be able to overcome her obstacles? Will she be able to break her shackles and subdue her enemies?

I invite you on this journey to “The Kingdom of Malayadhwaja”.
